Dear Friends,
We are not the first generation to feel the ground shake beneath us. Headlines come in waves—conflict, threats, instability, uncertainty. And if we’re honest, “wars and rumors of wars” don’t just happen out there; they can move in here—into our homes, our minds, our sleep, our conversations, and our prayers.
Our Lord Jesus prepared His disciples for this very moment of living in a troubled world. He said: “And you will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.” (Matthew 24:6, LSB)
Notice what Christ does: He does not deny the turmoil—He directs our hearts through it. “See that you are not alarmed.” That command is not a call to numbness; it’s a call to faith. It is possible to be clear-eyed about the world and calm-hearted in Christ.
Here are three anchors for our souls when the news is loud and fear feels near:
1) Christ reigns, even when nations rage
God has never surrendered His throne. The kingdoms of this world rise and fall, but the King of kings is not pacing heaven’s halls in anxiety. Scripture teaches us to interpret the shaking world through the unshakable sovereignty of God.
When the noise of the world grows, preach this to your heart: My Father is not surprised. My Savior is not threatened. My future is not uncertain.
2) Christ is with you, even when your heart trembles
Jesus does not merely rule from afar—He shepherds His people up close. He says:
“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33, LSB)
Peace is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of Christ. He does not promise a tribulation-free life. He promises Himself—His nearness, His help, His comfort, His Word, His Spirit, His church.
3) Christ gives peace through prayer, even when anxiety presses in
The Lord does not shame His children for feeling weak; He invites us to bring our weakness to Him.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and pleading with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6–7, LSB)
When anxiety rises, don’t merely “try harder” to be calm—turn Godward. Open your Bible. Get specific in prayer. Ask others to pray with you. Let the Lord guard what you cannot.
The puritan Thomas Watson wrote “If God be our God, He will give us peace in trouble. When there is a storm without, He will make peace within. The world can create trouble in peace, but God can create peace in trouble.” That is not wishful thinking. That is gospel reality for those who belong to Christ.
Friends, let’s be a people who watch the world honestly and worship the Lord steadily. Let’s speak to one another with hope, not panic. Let’s disciple our children with confidence, not dread. Let’s pray for rulers and victims and enemies alike, remembering that Christ is gathering His elect from every nation—even in the darkest hours.
If you are weary, reach out. If fear has been clinging to you, don’t carry it alone. And if you are not yet in Christ, hear this clearly: the safest place in the universe is not a location—it is a Person. Come to Jesus. He receives sinners. He forgives completely. He gives peace that the world cannot give.
Soli Deo Gloria!
